In 1992, the mint began
offering collectors a silver version of the proof set housed in a black
box where the dime, quarter and half dollar were minted in the
traditional 90% silver composition of earlier years. These sets were
also offered as Premier Silver Proof Sets which were housed in a plush
case inserted in a nice box (see above).
Beginning in 1999 with the
introduction of the Statehood Quarter Commemorative Coins, silver proof
sets were issued in two hard plastic cases and housed in a red box. One
case contained the cent through half dollar (and dollar after 1999) and
the other case contained the five Statehood Commemorative Quarters
issued that year.
Beginning in
2007 with the
introduction of the Presidential Dollar Commemorative Coin Program,
proof sets were issued in three hard plastic cases (as above) with that
years four presidential dollars in the third case. In 2009, the mint
produced the 6 Territorial Quarters and 4 different Lincoln cents
so the 2009 set contains 18 coins in four hard plastic cases.
The mint did not offer the silver
statehood quarters as a separate set prior to 2004. You had to buy the
complete silver proof set to obtain the proof silver statehood quarters
issued from 1999 to 2003. Beginning in 2004, the mint offered the
silver statehood quarters as a seperate five coin set.
