From 1980 through
1982, the proof sets were packaged in a hard plastic case with
a red background that slipped into a black plastic case that
could be used as an easel on which to display the set. Beginning
in 1983, the mint returned to packaging the proof sets in a hard
plastic case similar to those of the 1968-1972 series only with
changes in background colors and box colors.
In 1983, the Mint introduced Prestige
Proof Sets which included one or more commemorative coins from
that year.
