Modern proof set production
began at the Philadelphia Mint in 1936 and ran through 1942 when
production ceased due to World War II. Proof set production began
again in 1950. These early proof sets were issued in small cardboard
boxes in which the coins were housed in cellophane envelopes.
Most of these early sets have been placed into various types
of holders over the years (to better protect the coins and to
retard tarnishing), with the most popular being Capital Plastics'
proof set holder. It is difficult to find these early sets in
their original boxes. Please expect that some coins in these
early sets may be toned as our sets are original and uncleaned.
All of these proof coins are in Choice to Gem condition.
Most of our
early proof sets are in Capital holders.
