Australian Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns

Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns of Queen Victoria

1837-1901

Queen Victoria ruled the United Kingdom from 1837 until her death in 1901. Three different obverse head styles were used on sovereigns minted during her reign. From 1838-1887, Queen Victoria was depicted in her youth (young-head style). The Jubilee head style commemorating Victoria's 50th year as Queen was introduced in 1887 and used through 1893. The old head, or veiled head, style was used from 1893 until 1901. Sovereigns of Queen Victoria come with both the St. George and shield reverses.

Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns of King George V

1911 - 1932

Two similar, yet distinct, head styles were used on the sovereigns of King George V. The first portrait, the "Large Head", of George V was used from 1911 to 1928.

In 1929, the portrait on George V sovereigns was changed to the second or "Small Head" type. This was only used on the four dates issued from 1929 to 1932. All King George V sovereigns have the St. George reverse.
