The U S Mint's modern commemorative coin program began in 1982 with the first commemorative coin produced since 1954 (not counting the 1976 bicentennial coins). The Washington half dollar was minted in 90% silver as are the commemorative silver dollar coins. Most of the commemorative half dollars minted since the Washington are of a cupro-nickel clad composition. All of the commemorative gold coins are 90% gold.
