This silver dollar commemorates the 200th
anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition to explore the
new territory resulting from the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The obverse depicts Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the leaders
of the expedition. The reverse features a Peace Medal between
two feathers and 15 stars representing the number of states in
the Union at that time. This coin was designed by Donna Weaver
of the United States Mint Engraving Staff.
The Lewis & Clark Dollar coin was produced
with both Proof and Uncirculatd finishes and was sold individually
or in a special Pouch set (see below) and a coin and currency
set. Mintages were 288,492 on the Proof and 90,323 with the Uncirculated
finish.
