Proof 2004 Lewis & Clark Silver Dollar

 This silver dollar commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition to explore the new territory resulting from the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The obverse depicts Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the leaders of the expedition. The reverse features a Peace Medal between two feathers and 15 stars representing the number of states in the Union at that time. This coin was designed by Donna Weaver of the United States Mint Engraving Staff.

The Lewis & Clark Dollar coin was produced with both Proof and Uncirculatd finishes and was sold individually or in a special Pouch set (see below) and a coin and currency set. Mintages were 288,492 on the Proof and 90,323 with the Uncirculated finish.

This interesting Mint offering for the Lewis & Clark Dollar includes a handmade leather and bead pouch made by a Native American artisan whose tribal ancestors met the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The pouch in this set was made by April Fox of the Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara now known as Three Affiliated Tribes located in the current state of North Dakota.
