The Stone Mountain commemorative half dollar
was issued to finance the carving of Confederate leaders and
soldiers on Stone Mountain in Georgia. The models for this coin
were designed by Gutzon Borglum who started the carving on Stone
Mountain but left to carve Mt. Rushmore. The obverse features
Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
mounted on horseback. The reverse features an eagle perched on
a rock and the message: Memorial to the valor of the soldier
of the South. Mintage was 1,314,709.
This Stone Mountain half dollar has a strong strike
with great lustre and minimum contact marks.
