The Old Spanish Trail commemorative half
dollar was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the
overland trek of the Cabeza de Vaca Expedition through the Gulf
states in 1535. The explorer's name literally translated means
"head of a cow" so this design was chosen for the obverse.
The reverse features a yucca tree and a map showing the Old Spanish
Trail. Mintage was only 10,008.
This Old Spanish Trail half dollar has a decent
strike with subdued lustre and minimum contact marks.
