1937 Roanoke Island Commemorative Half Dollar PCGS MS-68

The Roanoke commemorative half dollar was issued in 1937 to mark the 350th anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony" and the birth of Virginia Dare, the first white child born in British North America. The obverse features the bust of Sir Walter Raleigh. The reverse has a figure representing Ellinor Dare holding the infant Virginia. The coin was designed by William Marks Simpson. Mintage was 29,030.

This gem Roanoke half dollar has an extremely strong strike with excellent lustre. The surfaces are mark-free. The PCGS population report shows only 12 Roanoke half dollars graded as MS-68 with none higher. A truly rare and desirable coin.
