The Norfolk commemorative half dollar was
issued in 1936 to mark the 300th anniversary of the original
Norfolk, Virginia land grant and the 200th anniversary of the
establishment of the borough of Norfolk. The obverse depicts
the Seal of the City of Norfolk with a three-masted sailing ship
as the central device. The reverse features the Royal Mace of
Norfolk presented by Governor Dinwiddie in 1753. The coin was
designed by William Marks Simpson and his wife, Marjorie Emory
Simpson. Mintage was 16,936.
This Norfolk half dollar is sharply struck with
beautiful lilac toning on both sides and no discernible contact
marks. A very lovely coin.
