The first commemorative gold coins were issued
as souvenirs of the 1904 World's Fair held in St. Louis, Missouri.
Two varieties were issued. One variety featured the head of Thomas
Jefferson who was President at the time of the Louisiana Purchase.
The other variey featured the head of William McKinley, President
at the time of the celebration. Both varieties have the same
reverse with Louisana Purchase Exposition St. Louis encircling
the denomination and dual dates,1803-1903. The designs were by
C. E. Barber. Mintage of both varieties was 17,500.
This McKinley/Louisiana Purchase gold dollar has
an extremely strong strike with excellent lustre and nearly perfect
surfaces. A PQ coin for the grade.
