The Iowa commemorative half dollar was minted
in 1946 to mark the 100th anniversary of Iowa's statehood. The
obverse shows the first stone capitol building in Iowa City while
the Iowa state seal is featured on the reverse. This commemorative
half was first sold only to the residents of Iowa with only a
few pieces sold to others. This issue was sold out within a few
months except for some that were held back by the state for sale
at a future date. This hi-grade example is probably one of those
held back. The Iowa half was designed by Adam Pietz of Philadelphia.
Mintage was 100,057.
This Iowa commemorative half dollar is virtually
perfect in every way with a great strike, excellent lustre and
no contact marks. PCGS has not graded any Iowa half dollars higher
than MS-68.
