The Delaware commemorative half dollar was
minted to mark the 300th anniversary of the landing of the Swedes
in Delaware in 1935. The Swedish colonists landed at the current
Wilmington and established a church which is the oldest Protestant
church still used for worship. Their ship, the Kalmar Nyckel,
is shown on the reverse while the Old Swedes Church is featured
on the obverse. The coin was authorized in 1936, struck in 1937,
and dated 1938 on the reverse and 1936 on the obverse. The Delaware
half was designed by Carl L. Schmitz who won the design competition.
Mintage was 20,993.
This Delaware commemorative half dollar has a great
strike with excellent lustre and mark-free surfaces. A very lovely
example.
