This original series
of 24 medals was minted exclusively for workers in the aerospace
industry and Franklin Mint collectors. The subjects honored were
chosen by a distinguished board of advisors who had made space
history. The obverse of each medal features a design portraying
a key event in the history of America in space. The reverse relates
a bit of the history of the event being portrayed. In 1973, and
again in 1976, additional medals, 12 and 24 respectively, were
offered to collectors of the first 24 medals. In total, there
are 60 medals in this series.
These pure Sterling Silver
39mm. medals were minted with proof surfaces. Each collection
of 12 medals contains 9.7 troy ounces. This 24 medal set contains
19.4 troy ounces.
The 24 medal set offered
here contains the first 24 medals minted and issued in 1970 and
1971. The medals are in a naturally toned condition and have
not been handled or abused in any way. This set of 24 America
in Space medals is housed in the album of issue, but is missing
No.3 of the 24 individual informational papers.
