Franklin Mint Treasures of the Louvre Series These beautiful sterling silver proof art medals depict some of the great treasures of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Louvre was opened as a museum on August 10, 1793 after having served as the palace of a succession of French kings for the previous 600 years. Louis XIV is credited with establishing the nucleus of the museum by installing a Gallery of Antiques for the display of Greek and Roman statues and special rooms for his collection of medals and paintings. The palace-museum survived the French Revolution and was greatly enriched with the art treasures brought back by Napoleon and his armies who swept through Europe and the Middle East. After his defeat at Waterloo, many of these treasures were retuned to the country of origin, but many were incorporated into the Louvre collection through gifts and purchases. The treasures included in this medallic tribute were selected by seven Conservators representing the seven different departments of the Louvre, home of the world's greatest collection of art masterpieces. These medals come in the original plastic capsules and are in choice proof condition. The pure sterling silver choice proof medals in this table are 45mm. in diameter, with each containing one and a quarter ounce of sterling silver.
