1853 $1 Liberty Gold Coin PCGS MS-64

Coinage of a gold dollar coin was first authorized in 1849. Over the next 40 years, the US Mint produced three different types of gold dollars for circulation. Liberty Head gold dollars were minted from 1849 through 1854 and are known as Type I gold dollars. In 1854, the dollar coins were made larger in diameter and thinner. The Indian Princess head, small head, was minted in 1854 through 1856. This Type II dollar is the scarcest of the $1 gold coin types. The Type III gold dollars featured a larger Princess Head and were minted from 1856 through 1889.

This 1853 Liberty head gold dollar coin has an extremely sharp strike with subdued lustre and mark-free surfaces. A very nice example of the Type I gold dollar.
