This $20 gold coin design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
was introduced in 1907. The original design called for the coins
to be struck in high-relief and 11,250 were produced for general
circulation. After complaints from bankers about stacking problems
and to reduce minting costs, the relief was lowered later in
1907. The St. Gaudens $20 gold coin has long been considered
to be one of the most beautiful designs ever produced by the
United States Mint.
The 1907 and early 1908 coins were produced without
the motto "In God We Trust". This motto was added to
subsequent issues beginning in 1908 resulting in two varieties
of St. Gaudens $20 gold coins, those with, or without, the motto.
This first year of issue 1907 $20 St. Gaudens
gold coin is about as good as they come having been graded MS-66
by PCGS. Only 7 coins of this date have been rated higher by
PCGS (all MS-67) making this one of the finest available.
