Introduced in 1854, the $3 gold piece was never
popular with the public and the denomination saw very little
circulation. Although minted from from 1854 through 1889, only
a little over 500,000 total coins of this denomination were produced.
This first year of issue 1854 was the most heavily minted with
136,618 produced making this one of the most affordable dates
of this rare type. PCGS has certifed only 15,412 coins of this
denomination.
This nice 1854 $3 gold piece has a great strike
with excellent lustre and is virtually mark-free. This coin is
PQ for the grade.
