The Singapore
Mint began production of their lunar coin series in 1984. The
series ran through 1995. The Chinese Lunar Calendar runs in twelve
year cycles and names each of the twelve years after an animal.
Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to
come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to
bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one
in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling
the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on
personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your
heart."
The coins were
minted in pure .999 fine gold and are available in 1/20, 1/10,
1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce sizes. Mintages were very low for the Singapore
Lunar Gold Coin Series (see chart below). Many of these coins
have been put into jewelry over the years leaving few mint condition
specimens for collectors. All of our Singapore Lunar gold coins
are in choice, mint condition with most of them in their original
packaging.
Platinum and Silver
lunar year coins with the same design were also produced.
River City Coins
& Jewelry also stocks a large selection of 14K gold bezels
if you wish to make your coin into a piece of jewelry. (See below)
