The China Mint
of The Peoples Republic of China began producing panda gold coins
in 1982. The pandas are minted in pure gold and are mostly minted
in 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 Ounce sizes (see specifications
chart below). Larger pandas have been minted in sizes up to 12
ounces, but not in large quantities and these larger issues are
rarely seen. Up until 2002 they changed the reverse (Panda) designs
each year resulting in a very collectible series. In 2002 the
China Mint announced that they were going to use the 2001 design
on future panda gold coin issues. Fortunately, for those who
collect them, the Mint changed their minds and did produce a
new panda design in 2003. The obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer
for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven and has been modified
only slightly over the years (see below). The pandas are not
minted in great quantities like some bullion gold coins and their
popularity in jewelry has resulted in very few mint condition
issues remaining in most of the earlier designs. All of our pandas
are in mint condition and almost all are still in their original
mint packaging.
River City Coins
& Jewelry also stocks a large selection of 14K gold bezels
if you wish to wear your coin as a piece of jewelry (see below).
