Hard Times Tokens

Hard Times Tokens, as they came to be known, were produced in the mid 1830s in a variety of types and styles. The US had fallen on "hard times" as a result of President Jackson's battle with the banks over control of US Funds. Hard times tokens were mostly made of copper and were the size of the large US cents in circulation at the time. Hard times tokens are divided into 5 categories:

1) Pieces referring to the Bank of the United States and the surrounding controversy.

2) Those depicting satirical or political situations of the time.

3) Tokens with designs resembling regular cent coinage but different enough to evade the counterfeiting laws.

4) Those that bear advertisements of private merchants also known as "Store Cards".

5) Die mulings: Combinations with the obverses and reverse of any of the above.
